Developing Ball Handling Skills

Students in grades Kindergaten and Second Grade are working on
developing skills related to gross motor and fine motor skills.
The gross motor skills are similar to ball handling:
Catching, Dribbling, Bouncing, Throwing, and Shooting

These are what I consider foundational skills to build confidence
and gross motor skills that lead up to increased eye and hand
coordination.

Fine motor skills are more focused with finger and hand manipulation.
They are more specific in design and execution.
I like to combine each into developmental lessons that
are in stations or centers.

Stations include:
Placing milk crates about the multipurpose room
and allowing students to shoot different balls / materials
into the crates.
Stations are:
1. Bean Bags
2. Tennis Balls
3. Smaller 9" basketballs
4. Regulation size basketballs
5. Shuttlecocks

Each requires a different kind of force execution
so the students even as young as Kindergarten can
learn that balls and other materials require not just
force, but finesse.

I incorporate the word "finesse" into the lesson
and use visual examples.

Tennis Anyone

Students from Kindergarten to Fifth grade have been involved in various tennis drills and practices.
The objective is to show and demonstrate additional skills
that require eye and hand coordination, mental concentration,
ball manipulation and individual determination to achieve
specific goals.

Specific Goals:
Kindergarten to Second
The students will be able to:
1. Bounce and catch tennis balls
2. Dribble tennis balls
3. Alternate hand dribbling, transitioning from
right hand to left hand.
4. Dribble twice then shoot into basket.
5. Dribble and bounce on tennis racket strings.
6. Interpret the parts of the tennis racket.
This seems like alot of information, but working with
students, transitioning from one skill to another there
is dialogue about each skill.

Third to Fifth
Basically the same procedure, but with more emphasis on
racket and ball manipulation.
Tennis being more of an individual sport allows students
to learn about their own potential to play non-traditional
sports.

First Week of Physical Education

The first week of Physical Education went very well. The students were very excited and hyped to come to PE.

The games played for K, 1st, and 2nd were Cars (a racing game) and ball skills with tennis balls.

The games played with third, fourth, fifth were the favorites at this grade level, Kickball and Dodgeball.
The third, fourth, and fifth grade students had excellent games, displayed sportsmanship and I compliment the young ladies for showing great pose, team work and confidence in their skills..

Parents please reinforce self confidence in the young ladies. It may not seem there is a lack of self confidence, but at this age/grade many young ladies have a tendency to doubt their abilities.
This is also displayed academically, young ladies seem to need more reinforcement not less.
